Preventing Common Gym Injuries: Fitness SF | Forge PT Workshop

November 15, 2023

I recently had the opportunity to lead an injury prevention workshop for the training team at Fitness SF in Marin. The goal of the session was to help coaches recognize common movement patterns that contribute to injuries and provide practical ways to keep members training safely.

Common Injury Areas in the Gym

Across strength training and functional fitness environments, injuries most often involve a few key areas:

  • Shoulder: often during overhead press, pull-ups, or bench press
  • Lower back: often during deadlift, back-squats
  • Knee: often during high-impact movements

Many of these problems develop gradually as movement patterns and training volume accumulate over time.

Stable Spine create a Strong Foundation

One of the biggest themes of the workshop was the importance of spinal stability.

When the spine is well supported by proper abdominal engagement and breathing mechanics, we can drastically reduce the risk of injury and allow our limbs to move more efficiently. When that stability is missing, the body often compensates, which can place additional stress on the shoulders or lower back over time.

Coaches Are the First Line of Defense

Coaches and trainers play a major role in injury prevention because they see athletes move every day. They are knowledgeable and can spot mobility or stability deficits before an injury occurs.

Often the goal is not to stop training completely but to modify movements so athletes can continue training safely. Small adjustments such as altering squat depth, modifying overhead pressing angles, or substituting similar movement patterns can help reduce stress on irritated joints while keeping people active.

Recovery Is Part of Performance

Training creates stress on the body and important physiological adaptations happen when we give our bodies time to recover. Factors such as sleep, hydration, nutrition, and stress management all deeply influence how well the body tolerates training and allow our bodies to grow stronger and more resilient.

Staying Healthy While Training in Marin

Many of Marin athletes I see at Forge Physical Therapy are active people who train regularly at local schools, gyms, and clubs around Mill Valley, Corte Madera, Greenbrae, San Rafael, Larkspur, and Sausalito. The most common issues I help people address are related to rotator cuff tears, disc herniations, sciatica, and meniscus tears. Identifying an athlete’s mobility and strength limitations early can often prevent small problems from turning into more serious injuries.

At Forge Physical Therapy, we specialize in helping active people move better, recover from injuries, and get back to doing the activities they enjoy.
